One quiet evening, I stood on the staircase searching through my bag for the keys to my apartment. It was already dark. The staircase light wasn’t working, and the only illumination came from the street lanterns filtering through the windows.I had almost found the key when a stranger came down from upstairs.
He stopped in front of me. He looked at me for a long moment, intensely enough to make me uncomfortable. Then he said: “Open the door.” I stared at him.“ But sir… this is my apartment.” He only smiled. And kept looking. “You already opened it.” My knees suddenly went weak. Something moved deep inside me, the strange feeling that a secret I had buried where nobody could ever reach it had just been read by a complete stranger. “Sir… why did you do that?” “Because you asked me to.” “But I didn’t say a word. ”He smiled again. “You didn’t have to. I saw it in your eyes.” Then he stepped away. “Now lock the door. Some secrets should never be revealed.” And he left. There is a saying that souls meet on lovers’ lips. But perhaps there is another one: The soul’s secrets are hidden in the beholder’s eyes. Never look if you are afraid of what you might see. Hape Dere.
Some doors should be locked forever
